There are a plethora of video games that release every year, and only a few dozen of them have what you might call "great sales". Granted, every game has different opinions of success, and some who want it don't get it, and some who don't expect it get it in droves. For Insomniac Games, the team who created Ratchet and Clank, Sunset Overdrive, Resistance: Fall of Man, and more, they were in an interesting position when they found themselves in control of making a video game based on Marvel's Spider-Man. Comic book video games are notoriously hit and miss, so they had to make sure they did it right.
Early buzz had the game being really good, and upon release, the game shot to the top of the charts all over the world. In just 3 days it sold 3.3 million dollars, and good word of mouth has been pushing it even further into high sales territory. And now, we know via GFK that in the United Kingdom, the game has sold so well that it's already the 2nd best-selling game of 2018. The only game that is in front of it is FIFA 18. Of course, with many major titles coming out, including FIFA 19 having launched recently, this could all change over the next few weeks and months, we'll just have to see.
Still, for a game still somewhat new and fresh to be doing so well in multiple major areas of gaming is impressive. And this is without us knowing just how well it is doing in the United States and Japan. Granted, it likely won't reach the top spot all over the world (because of titles like FIFA, Monster Hunter World, and more), but there's little doubt that it will be in the top 10 best-sellers of 2018 barring a slew of big releases doing better than it, which is possible...but unlikely.
Easily the thing that gamers and reviewers have noted the most about Spider-Man from Insomniac is just how much fun they can have in the world. The game is littered with not just a fun story, but a truly open-world New York that they can play around in and have fun with. And trust me when I say, they're doing so, especially with the "Selfie Mode" function. Not to mention that the games version of New York has numerous Easter Eggs to various Marvel characters that you can find, as well as numerous collectible hunts that can let you get new Spider-Man suits and more.
Add to that, the game is getting downloadable content soon, the first of which is a heist DLC starring recurring villain and love interest Black Cat. So there's going to be even more for gamers to enjoy as time goes on.
Many are wondering if the success of this Spider-Man title will lead to Insomniac or other Sony developers getting the chance to make more superhero games on the system. Marvel has shown interest in this, but whether they pull the trigger is up for debate.
