Piranha Games has recently released a trailer showcasing MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries’ different Biomes and some gameplay. First debuting in 2016, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries has had a few uploaded videos of the game and released gameplay information with the most recent one being on Mar 15, 2018. The MechWarrior series involves you playing in a futuristic setting as a soldier piloting a giant military mech suit and fighting other Mechs.
The trailer showcases many of the games’ beautiful environments ranging from lush forests, dry deserts, mountainous terrain, advanced cities, and military bases. Objects in the different biomes such as trees and buildings can be damaged and eventually destroyed. This can completely change how you fight as you run to find a spot to duck and cover. There are deep canyons that you can traverse over in some environments and this would cause a problem for mechs without jetpacks and they will have to find other ways around.
Weather seems to play a part in this game as well. As you can see from the video, there is fog and electrical storms among other hazards that can play a part in how you go about the game. The fog will affect visibility while the electrical storm would most likely damage your mech.
Previously, Piranha Games has released some info about the game involving game mechanics and other tidbits of information. According to the President of Piranha Games Russ Bullock, he stated there will now be a singleplayer campaign for MechWarrior 5. This campaign can be played co-op with 3 other players. This would be a big step for MechWarrior because not only will it finally have a campaign that can be played, you can do so with up to 3 other people.
MechWarrior 5 has over 3,000 star systems that make up its universe and the campaign takes you through most of them. You can travel to 300 of the planets from various solar systems and take up contracts and earn money and reputation with different factions. Eventually, you can work your way up to bigger and better contracts with more of a payout. In Mech Warrior 5: Mercenaries you are given a weak starter Mech to make a name for yourself and your mercenary company. Everything you do in the game will cost you money. Every bullet, rocket, laser, repair, and Mechs lost in a fight will cost you. You have complete control over customizing what your Mech and your support Mechs carry with them, whether weapons, jetpacks or other abilities. There are over Mech 60 chassis to choose from with 300 to 400 different modifications. All of this costs money so you must manage your budget accordingly.
As you progress through the campaign, the timeline jumps to different time periods forward in the MechWarrior universe and you can only use what technology is available for that time period. New technologies are invented in each time period and some are lost according to the lore, so each jump forward in the timeline calls for different weapons and other tech used for your Mechs.
In this game, battles are a lot more in-depth than before. You no longer just face other Mechs in combat, you now must fight land and air vehicles, artillery, and infantry. You must manage your ammo, keep your weapons from overheating, and take cover according to where your enemy is. If your cover has been destroyed you must run to find some more since enemies can come from any angle now, even above. Damage on Mechs can now be seen visually and have different stages of damage which includes armor peeling back all the way to just leaving behind mechanical skeletons. Damage must be repaired after your battles as well as resupplying ammo for your Mechs.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will launch sometime later in December of 2018. It is even possible this might get delayed. This game has not confirmed on any platforms, but will most likely be on PC like its previous games in the series. Maybe we will see it on consoles as well, only time will tell.
