Amazon's 'New World' MMO Delayed Due to COVID-19
Amazon has had an MMO in the works for quite a while now. Yes, while the company has been busy in a multitude of different areas, they've sectioned off one part of their business to focus on game development. The name of the MMO is New World, and right now it exists in the form of a playable alpha. According to Amazon, though, the expected release date for the full, finished product has now been pushed back. As expected, this is due to the COVID-19 pandemic; more specifically, the challenges the dev team has faced when it comes to working remotely. As it turns out, polishing up a big, immersive MMO for release is a lot more tricky when the entire team is quarantined at their homes.
"We have made the hard decision to delay the release of New World until August 25th, 2020 and the start of the Closed Beta to July," the company states in their latest blog post. "Like most of you, our entire team has been sequestered as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. While we are still making great progress, developing an ambitious MMO like New World remotely has introduced some challenges. We want to make sure that we have the time needed to make New World the very best it can be for our players. As a result, we've chosen to delay the game's release in order to reach our quality bar as we work remotely for the foreseeable future." Originally, the Closed Beta was planned for this month. Amazon has promised more information up until the August launch, which will be something to keep on top of.
New World is an MMO that features a lot of cooperation between players, as well as battles against others. Set in the fictional world of Aeternum, the game focuses heavily on survival elements and resource gathering. In addition to the delay news, Amazon shared some info about New World's Invasion mode. Invasion works similar to horde modes from other games, where you and a team of other players will be tasked with protecting your fortress from waves and waves of monsters. This PvE event will be scheduled every four days and features upwards of 50 players participating. The base game focuses on similar base-defense mechanics, in which you'll put the resources you've gathered to use by building bases and defending them from monsters as well as other players seeking you out to raid your stuff.
The delay is some rough news for Amazon, all in the midst of the storm that is COVID-19. The company has come under fire recently for its policies behind warehouse workers and keeping them on the front-lines, even at the risk of infection. The pandemic has also impacted major games like The Last of Us Part 2, which likely won't be the last major AAA title to be affected. Once New World releases, it will be available on Windows PC. You can sign up for the Closed Beta on New World's website, so make sure to get in before the July start date if you're curious. Hopefully, despite the delay, the game will have the time it needs to get properly polished and ready for its full release. It will need it, especially due to its status as an MMO, games known for rocky launches due to servers and player counts.
