It's hard to believe we live in a world where SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is getting a remake, but here we are. The original game was a huge hit in every sense of the word, seeing large amounts of popularity on every platform it released to (and there were quite a few). Since that game released in 2003, the nostalgia for it has only been growing ever since. Rehydrated was first announced in 2019 just before E3 that year. It's being developed by Purple Lamp Studios, while the ever-prolific THQ Nordic is handling the publishing side of things. Rehydrated is a full remake of the original BFBB, and it's bringing with it all sorts of new and wonderful things. Many of these things are shown off in the latest trailer for the game, which was put out several days ago on THQ Nordic's official YouTube channel

In Rehydrated, you'll take control of one out of three characters: SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, or Sandy Cheeks. Just like before, the trio are battling their way through Bikini Bottom to put a stop to the evil plans of Plankton, ever-thirsty for that Krabby Patty secret formula. The trailer makes it clear that the team is trying their best to retain the classic feel of the original game while still putting a new spin on it. It's all been beautifully remade in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4, and according to the devs, it will support 4K resolution on the beefier PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Moving away from the visual side of things, what new content can we expect in the game proper? For those more social, a multiplayer mode has been implemented, though details on this are a little more scarce. Various levels that were cut from the drawing board for the original game have been included this time around, bringing back some cool ideas that fans missed back in the day. According to the team, there's a lot of cut content here.

As if all that weren't enough, the soundtrack has been remastered as well. The original's OST does a perfect job of recreating the feeling that you're watching an episode of SpongeBob, and the remastered version only goes further towards that goal. If you've read this far, it's likely that SpongeBob SquarePants needs no introduction. The hit cartoon first began at the turn of the century, and went on to become Nickelodeon's hugest success, and one of the most successful animated series of all time. Kids around the world who grew up with it remember it fondly for its off-the-wall humor and memetic gags, and it's still enjoyed fondly by people of all ages to this day. Due to the popularity of the series, it naturally spun-off into several different video games. All of these games saw varying levels of commercial performance, but none were so beloved as Battle for Bikini Bottom.

You can check out the trailer for Rehydrated below. A word of warning: prepare your nostalgia meter, because it will go off-the-charts. If you have an itching to try out the original game, it's available on all of the following platforms: PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, Windows PC, and Game Boy Advance. Just know you'll have to do some hunting down to find it; it is an older game, after all. As for Rehydrated, that game will be releasing on June 23rd this year. It will be available for Windows PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders for the former two are now open, and details for the latter two will arrive at a future date. There are a couple of special editions that can be perused as well, so keep that in mind if you're all-in on a pre-order. Luckily, we don't have long to wait.
