WB's Next Batman Game is the Star-Studded Gotham Knights
DC FanDome was an incredibly packed and newsworthy event this year. Despite the coronavirus pandemic forcing things to stay in the realm of the online, that didn't slow down the announcements at all. There were several notable highlights, the most obvious being Rocksteady's next big game (Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League). We got a decent look at that, and we're more familiar with what Rocksteady is planning for their villain-focused title. One other highlight included an announcement from WB Games. They've been working for a while now on a new Batman game, only this time around, Batman isn't the star of the show. This new game, Gotham Knights, got its first reveal right in the middle of FanDome.
"In Gotham Knights, players can explore the open-world action of Gotham and patrol the dark streets of the city's five distinct boroughs using a variety of traversal abilities and heroic combat moves, as well as the iconic Batcycle," WB Games' description reads. "As Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin progress, their distinctive gameplay skills will evolve, along with a growing arsenal of weaponry and gear." That's right; Gotham Knights is a game centered around Batman's sidekicks. The team steps in after Batman's apparent demise. Because of the team nature of this story, the game can be played either by yourself or completely co-op with a second player. As far as the gameplay goes, it looks pretty similar to what we've come to expect from Batman games before. There's a bit more variety this time around thanks to having four playable characters to choose from.
There seems to have been some confusion and mix-up regarding Gotham Knights and Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game. An understandable one considering Rocksteady's newest outing doesn't focus on Batman either, but let's clear the confusion. Rocksteady was responsible for the popular Arkham series of Batman games, which really set the bar for open-world superhero games as a whole. WB Games followed suit with Batman: Arkham Origins. While not developed by Rocksteady, Origins was still related to the Arkham universe they set up, even if it was in more of a spinoff capacity. Cue some shock and confusion when WB's next game is Gotham Knights. To sum all of this up, Rocksteady and WB are two different studios. In order to further the distinction this time around, WB Games later confirmed that Gotham Knights will be an original story completely unrelated to the Arkham series.
So, when can we play Gotham Knights? After all, we've already got a decent-length gameplay trailer; maybe it'll be ready soon! Unfortunately, we only have a 2021 release window for now! The game will be coming to both current-gen and next-gen platforms, however. PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC were all confirmed. The game will pit players against the infamous Court of Owls, and it's sure to have a lot that Batman fans will love. Don't forget to check out the aforementioned gameplay trailer below here to see just what Gotham Knights is all about. It's a decent slice of gameplay too, and looks like another exciting addition to the ever-expanding universe of Batman and his cohorts.
