Despite its 3rd party woes in the past with consoles like the Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U, Nintendo has most definitely bounced back with the Nintendo Switch. Just last year, the console got exclusives like Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and more. As well as ported games like Disgaea 5 Complete, Resident Evil Revelations, and others. But, with the second year of the Switch now in effect, people are looking for more exclusives, and one of the biggest confirmed ones so far is Octopath Traveler.

Developed by Square Enix, this unique JRPG is mixing 2D sprites, 3D backgrounds, and HD settings to create something truly special. But even more than that, the game is going to have eight protagonists, each with their own story that you can follow in the game. For the last several months, Square Enix has been slowly revealing these characters, and now via a new trailer, we know the final two. Allow us to break them down.

First of the new reveals is Cyrus, who is a Scholar in the game. His story will take him on a journey to find an ancient tome. As for what's special about this tome, it apparently holds an ancient mystery in it. As with each character in Octopath Traveler, Cyrus has a special "Path Action" that he can use in the overworld. HIs is called "Scrutinize". This Path Action allows him to examine the people he's talking to in order to gain insight into them or find clues that can help him solve mysteries he encounters in the game.

The final protagonist in the game is Ophelia, who is a Cleric. In the game, she's a part of the Order of the Sacred Flame. As part of her servitude to the Order, she goes off on a pilgrimage to try and "restore light back to the realm." As for her Path Action, it's called Guide. Unlike Primrose's power "Charm, Guide is used to help bring people together in order to make certain story actions happen and generally, make people happy.

The trailer also revealed some interesting new aspects of gameplay about Octopath Traveler. For example, just like every character has a "Path Action", they also have passive "Talent" that'll allow them to do certain things in the overworld or in battle. It just depends on the character. For example, Therion the Thief can use a Lock Pick ability to open chests, while Cyrus can use Study Foe to sense a weakness of an enemy he has not fought yet.

Finally, the trailer gave more insight into how the story will progress. In the beginning, you'll choose one character to start with, and then progress through their story. As you go on, you'll meet the other 7 characters of the game. This is where the twist comes in, as you'll be able to progress through each of their stories via Chapters. And you can choose which chapter to go into at any time. Meaning, you can experience all eight character's story in one playthrough, focus on just one character's story, or any number in between.

Octopath Traveler arrives on Nintendo Switch on July 13th. Stay tuned for any updates!
