Outbreak: The New Nightmare Review

Retrogamer Aug 20, 2018

Outbreak: The New Nightmare is a 3D survival horror that stays true to the roots of the classic horror genre. For those who are familiar with the class Resident Evil games, you will feel right at home with the gameplay of Outbreak: The New Nightmare. Just picture Resident Evil 2 but with the ability to play it co-op with your friends.

In this game, the difficulty settings really do matter unlike in most of today's games. I found that the game does start to pose a real challenge when you advance difficulty without first leveling up your character. This sure does make it feel like you're playing a classic Horror game, which was popular back in the day.

I did find some things that made it difficult to progress in the game. One of the major problems the game faces is that a sudden change in cameras makes it hard to run in a certain direction. Often times you will end up running back the wrong way, directly into a group of zombies. The characters move a lot faster than in a game like Resident Evil making it easy to get disoriented.

The graphics, on the other hand, are visually appealing and a joy to look at. It does look like it could be a remaster of a classic Resident Evil game but offers better-looking effects. Some animations do need a little tweaking, but I'm sure that it something that will be eventually fixed. After all, this game is a massive undertaking for just one person.

You find plenty of ammo in the lower difficulties, but it can run out just as fast as you find it. Zombies are all over the place and seems like they keep coming after you, even when you cleared an entire area. The enemy AI needs some work, for instance, zombies keep swiping at locked doors even when you're not near them.

With all of that aside, Outbreak: The New Nightmare is a really fun game, especially if you plan to play it multiplayer. If you're into the classic style zombie games or are looking for a fun co-op game to play with your friends, I highly recommend picking it up!
