First Sword

On the 5^th day of starting a new file in Stardew Valley, you’ll notice that the rock blocking the mines has been cleared. The mines are located north of your farm, just keep heading northeast and you will see the mine.

Once you enter the mine for the first time, a cutscene will trigger, and Marlon will give you a Rusty Sword. This is the first sword that you can obtain in the game and how to get a sword in Stardew Valley.

How to Get Another Sword

To get another sword in the game, head down deeper in the mine and break open all of the barrels and boxes you come across. Each one that you break has a chance of dropping a sword or other weapon. Every 10 floors you descend into the mine has a reward inside of a treasure chest. Some of these rewards are weapons, such as swords.

Ultimately you can go to the Adventurer's Guild, to the right of the mine entrance, and purchase a sword or other weapon from there. Marlon will be at the front counter, just approach him and purchase a sword. The further into the mine you get, the more swords and other weapons you’ll be able to purchase from the Adventurer's Guild. You will have to defeat 10 Green Slimes in the mine to be able to enter the Adventurer's Guild.
